2007 Music Rap

This is the first book to discuss in detail how rap music is put together musically. Whereas a great deal of popular music scholarship dismisses music analysis as irrelevant or of limited value, the present book argues that it can be crucial to cultural theory. It is unique for bringing together perspectives from music theory, musicology, cultural studies, critical theory, and communications. It is also the first scholarly book to discuss rap music in Holland, and the rap of Cree Natives in Canada, in addition to such mainstream artists as Ice Cube.

Rap music has been a hotbed of controversy since it erupted onto the music scene in the late 1970s. Hated by some and loved by many, rap had to fight to even be considered legitimate music. Once it was, the violence, prejudice, and sexism some listeners believed were in its lyrics became significant issues in both the political arena and society at large.

Pop rap - Pop rap is simply hip hop (rap) music with a very strong pop music influence. The more typically rough elements of hip hop music are smoothed away in order to achieve a crossover-friendly sound.

Memphis rap - Memphis rap is a specific type of Southern hip hop music that originated in Memphis, Tennessee. With stylistic roots in gangsta rap, it is the origin of "Buck" music, sometimes called "Crunk" music.

1990s music groups - In the 1990s, music had gone through the rap and house revolution, totally changing the landscape of music. While up to the 1980s, music seemed to get louder and louder, the 1990s music seemed to take a step back in rhythm, going from the aforementioned Rap revolution, to the slower, romantic lyrics of late '90s bands, while also witnessing a rise in alternative rock, and a couple of attempts at bringing back 80's style of pop.
